Squidward, sensing SpongeBob's fear, weaves him a terrifying tale on the spot of a "hash-slinging slasher," a clumsy Krusty Krab fry cook from years past who accidentally chopped off his hand and had it replaced with a rusty spatula. Incidental 6 does not read the "Closed" sign. After going outside screaming to throw away the trash, he comes back in and calls it an easy task. When the time comes to take out the trash, however, he shows some trepidation towards the darkness outside. Krabs then promptly leaves his employees while SpongeBob is overjoyed at this prospect and, as the night goes on, takes pleasure in the tasks he had no time to do during the day. Krabs tears apart the "Closed" sign and, against Squidward's wishes, proclaims the Krusty Krab to now be open 24 hours a day. Realizing the financial potential of a late-night shift, Mr. Squidward smugly informs him that they are closed, and the customer prepares to take his money elsewhere. However, a customer walks up to the door and attempts to make an order. One night, the Krusty Krab staff prepares for its 8:00 PM closing, which comes none too soon for Squidward.

On the later airings, the scene was Nosferatu turns off the light one last time to end the episode is removed. Krabs doesn't have to work while SpongeBob and Squidward do? When SpongeBob is washing the ceiling during a nighttime upside down, his hat stays on and the water doesn't spill out of the bucket. Next shot of him, he is on the other side of the street. The Hash-slinging slasher was dropped off right by the Krusty Krab doors. In the episode Ghost Host, Squidward says he doesn't believe in ghosts, but he acts as he does in this episode. Although Squidward says the walls always ooze green slime, the ooze isn't seen in other episodes. Nosferatu, a 1922 movie horror character, appears in this episode. Running Gag: Whenever someone asks for help, the person who was asked replies "I can't hang out here all night. But when he hugs Squidward, he is wearing his hat on his head again. When SpongeBob screams in terror, his hat falls off. When Squidward and SpongeBob notice the flickering lights and the phone, neon signs reading "Open Forever!" can be seen, but when the Hash-Slinging Slasher appears, the signs are gone. Nosferatu then appears and starts flickering the lights. He then explains that he called but hung up because he became nervous. When the figure approaches the register, however, they discover the figure was really a teenager who wished to be a fry cook. He and SpongeBob go insane and try to stay together. Squidward, however, denies it and it approaches them. As soon as they see him, the become terrified, but SpongeBob assumes it's Squidward attempting to entertain him by imitating the night of the fry cook's death. When he realizes they always ooze the slime, a bus appears, even though the buses don't run that late, and a figure similar to the Hash-Slinging Slasher appears. As soon as the phone hangs up, Squidward begins to count out the activity, mentioning that the walls ooze green slime. The phone then rings, but when Squidward answers, the caller hangs up. The lights, however, start to flicker, but they assume it's the faulty wiring in the building. Later that night, Squidward hears SpongeBob cleaning the ceiling and ignores it (until SpongeBob spooks him by shouting in his ear). SpongeBob replies by laughing hysterically. Squidward soon becomes annoyed because of SpongeBob's screaming and tells him to stop screaming, claiming that he made the story up. SpongeBob becomes terrified of the story, and screams repeatedly, while Squidward laughs. When he walks in and ignores it, Squidward tells him about the story of the Hash-Slinging Slasher (the ghost of a former fry cook who died near the restaurant that tries to attack the employees every night, showing he's coming by flickering the lights, ringing the phone, and appearing in the ghost of a bus). Squidward then tells him to take out the trash, and SpongeBob does but becomes terrified (even though he tries to hide it). SpongeBob then appears and gets excited about how great it is to work at the restaurant 24/7 and sings a song about it, doing his "chores" as he sings. Krabs realizes he'll generate more cash if he kept the Krusty Krab open 24/7, he tears apart the closed sign and declares that the restaurant is open 24/7. Tom, however, appears and attempts to order a Krabby patty and french fries. It is closing time at the Krusty Krab and Squidward is getting ready to go home.
